About BananaCal: who we are and how we write
BananaCal is an AI calorie counter for iPhone, available in 34 languages. It is made by Francesco Paciello, an independent developer based in Italy.
Who writes the articles
The guides on this site are researched and written by the BananaCal team with the help of AI tools. We are not doctors or dietitians, so we do not give personal medical advice: we explain what the research and official guidelines say, and we link to them.
How we check the facts
Every number in an article comes from a primary or authoritative source: peer-reviewed studies indexed on PubMed, health bodies such as the NHS, WHO and EFSA, and food composition databases such as USDA FoodData Central and national food tables. The sources are listed at the end of each article, and every PubMed reference is checked against PubMed before publishing.
When we run our own tests, we publish the method and its limits next to the results.
Example: our test of AI calorie counting on 68 weighed meals
Dates and updates
Each article shows when it was published. When we revise it, it also shows the date of the last update.
Not medical advice
Our content is general information. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a history of eating disorders, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before changing how you eat.
Why this site exists
We built BananaCal to make counting calories quick, and this site answers the questions people have along the way. It also presents the app, and it only describes features the app really has.
